Deborah Ross

Director of Studies

Deborah has true empathy for the student experience – it’s her goal to ensure each and every student at The Mind Lab & Tech Futures Lab feels that wrap-around support so essential to positive learning experiences.

As a graduate of language studies in German, French and Te Reo Māori, Deborah understands the vulnerability that comes with putting oneself into new unfamiliar spaces.

It’s her lived life experience as a learner and a teacher that Deborah credits as her superpower, giving her the ability to tap into all that she’s seen and done to connect to the entire student experience

Born in Canterbury, Deborah spent 17 years away from New Zealand living and raising a family with her dutch husband in the Netherlands. When she brought her family back to New Zealand in 2010, she was quickly scooped up by the University of Auckland English Language Academy (ELA) as an English tutor and worked her way up to head the General English division of the ELA.

It was here that she developed a deep compassion for the very fact that personal life and experience play an integral role in academic performance. Her view of the future of education is one that offers more flexibility and ‘stackable’ micro-credentials that allow for all those shifts and changes that life brings.

As Director of Studies for both The Mind Lab and sister company Tech Futures Lab, Deborah brings focus to creating safe, inclusive learning experiences that encourage all students to explore and flourish, so they can go out into the world to positively impact others.
