The Mind Lab by Unitec and MOTAT join forces to empower Kiwi kids and adults

We’ve got a brand new home over at MOTAT (Museum of Transport and Technology) from April 2018.

MOTAT and The Mind Lab share a natural synergy. As an interactive museum, MOTAT focuses on Kiwi ingenuity, and educating and inspiring the next generation. The Museum plays a valuable role in providing learning experiences outside of the classroom (LEOTC) which broaden and deepen curriculum understanding for more than 25,000 Auckland students each year. The MOTAT education team will continue to deliver programmes that use collection items and in-house subject expertise to cover topics from the Social Sciences, Science and Technology curriculum. Read the full press release here.

Same same but different

Never fear, The Mind Lab experience isn’t going to change. Same fantastic team, same future-focused content, and same wide-eyed excitement from our visitors (young and old).

Our Auckland lab will now be located at MOTAT 1 805 Great North Road, Western Springs, Auckland 1022. Entry to programmes will be via Gate C on Stadium Road.

About our School Groups

The Mind Lab by Unitec formed in 2013 with a mission to encourage young students to get excited by science and technology.

We look at new ways of learning and collaborating whilst using digital to extend students’ knowledge. We encourage children to enquire, investigate and experiment through hands-on creative learning methods.

Our core philosophy celebrates learning through failure, learning by doing, and empowering young people to lead their own educational journeys.

After a visit to The Mind Lab your students will develop:

Technical skills key competencies as they learn through collaborative and creative challenges that encompass Science, Technology, Mathematics and Arts.

Learning by doing

Our school group sessions are generally investigative, open-ended and multidisciplinary, however we also provide sessions that link directly to the New Zealand National Curriculum (NZC).

For example, while you may choose to set your students a robotics challenge, you could also choose a session related more specifically towards light energy, forces, the human body, measurement, technological systems etc. All sessions involve hands-on, active learning experiences where students learn through doing and where discovery and creativity are actively encouraged.
