Teach First NZ: Ako Mātātupu (TFNZAM)

The Mind Lab by Unitec is proud to be partnered with Teach First NZ: Ako Mātātupu, a not-for-profit organisation that seeks to help all young people fulfill their potential by addressing the systemic causes of educational inequality. It aims to bring more great people into the education sector to help achieve this vision as teachers, school leaders, and through leadership in other fields. The flagship Teach First NZ programme is a two-year, employment-based teaching and education leadership experience, delivered in partnership with schools serving low-income communities.

Teach First NZ: Ako Mātātupu (TFNZAM) identifies current needs in teaching and recruits outstanding individuals to develop skills and knowledge that will prepare them for the classroom. After an Initial Intensive training programme, participants enter into full salary teaching positions in secondary schools for two years. There, they’ll learn as they go, whilst completing their Master of Teaching and Education Leadership.

TFNZAM provides ongoing support to the participants who teach for at least two years in their placement school. TFNZAM is continuing to build a connected alumni network who have first-hand experience of educational inequality, and use these experiences to continue to work towards closing the education gap while helping raise the status of teaching in Aotearoa New Zealand.
