Teach First NZ: Ako Mātātupu (TFNZAM)

The Mind Lab is proud to be partnered with Teach First NZ: Ako Mātātupu, a not-for-profit organisation that is working towards the vision of all young people in Aotearoa reaching their full potential. Currently, New Zealand has one of the highest levels of educational inequality in the developed world, which results in thousands of students falling through the cracks of our education system. The Teach First NZ Programme works to address this issue by bringing more outstanding people into the education sector to help to achieve this vision as teachers, school leaders, and through leadership in other fields.

The Programme

The Teach First NZ Programme provides carefully selected participants with the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a school community, inspiring future generations of New Zealanders to fulfill their potential.

After an Initial Intensive training programme, participants of the Teach First NZ Programme enter into fully salaried teaching positions in secondary schools serving low income communities for two years. There, they’ll learn as they go, whilst completing their fully scholarshipped Master of Teaching and Education Leadership.

The programme provides ongoing support to the participants, who teach as employment-based trainee teachers (EBTT) on a 0.6 – 0.7 FTTE for at least two years in their host school. After this, Teach First NZ: Ako Mātātupu is continuing to build a connected network of alumni, who use their insight and experience to continue to work towards providing equal opportunities for our young people and making lasting contributions to an equal Aotearoa New Zealand.
