We’re looking for Learning Area Advisors!

Learning Area Advisor for Initial Teacher Education – Subject specialists in Science, Maths or English.

The Mind Lab by Unitec and Tech Futures Lab is seeking to appoint a facilitator to join an experienced team of The Mind Lab and Tech Futures staff and contribute to the teaching and leadership of its programmes. The successful candidate will have insight into current challenges within education in New Zealand. They will be well informed about the role of critically reflective practice in a variety of models which synthesises insights from a range of learning theories, in order to drive improvements in teaching practices. Experience in supporting teachers to actively reflect and provide them with meaningful observation feedback is essential.

Preference will be given to applicants who have been employed in a NZ secondary school in the last five years.

This position would be part time and by negotiation.


To provide professional observation, including written feedback and discussion, in support of the pedagogical and professional development of candidates generally and in specific subject areas. To participate and contribute to the Online Learning Communities.

To assist in assessment and moderation and to provide timely feedback to candidates

Facilitate at scheduled workshops for subject specialist area(x4 throughout the year)

To be proactive in ensuring TMLU and TFL interests are represented effectively

To adhere to Academic Policy and procedures.

If relevant, to maintain professional currency by adhering necessary professional requirements including research activity.

To assist in the evaluation of teaching and learning materials and strategies.

To take an active role in curriculum development and innovation.

To be eligible for this role applicants are expected to:

Demonstrate awareness of tikanga Māori / teu le vā and its application in the education environment

Advanced knowledge of current scholarly thinking around Māori and/or Pasifika development and educational advancement, particularly in regard to social justice and equity.

Have a commitment to the philosophical Values that underpin the programmes.

Maintain detailed curriculum knowledge in their specialist area

Have relevant experience in the mentoring of teachers

Be open to learning, and engaged in ongoing professional learning and development

You will:
