FULL WORKSHOP DETAILS – OCTOBER 2018 – AUCKLAND

Monday 1st October 2018 – Making It Safe

3D Design – Transport Safety
With many different types of vehicles that are now populating our roads and airspace, we ask the question, ‘Can you really design a safe vehicle, that can protect the occupants?’ We want to see what you can come up with – and who knows, you might just design something that could save someone’s life!

AND

Science & Engineering – Standing Up To An Earthquake
Can you build an earthquake-proof building? If so, is it really that easy and how much force can it withstand? Can you use modern day technology to help dampen the force? We get you investigating and looking at what makes a good structure and then get you using your new-found knowledge to build your own structure, combining it with new ideas and tech. We’ll see if it is possible to create the perfect structure that can stand up to a powerful quake!

Tuesday 2nd October 2018 – Space Exploration

Robotics – Build A Base On The Moon
Ever thought about using robots to build a base on the moon? Well, we’re going to try a little experiment and see if it’s possible to do just that. By creating a few bots that can pick up, push and navigate on their own, let’s see if it’s possible to build some structures that could one day house humankind in outer space!

AND

Film Making – Greetings Earthlings
What do you think would happen if other life-forms came to visit our planet for a day? Would they be friendly, good or bad? We want to see your imaginations run wild, as we get you to create your very own sci-fi movie.

Wednesday 3rd October 2018 – The Future

FULLY BOOKED

Thursday 4th October 2018 – Automation! It’s Here.

Robotics – The Self-Driving Car
The world of automation is upon us, it won’t be long before autonomous cars are carting us around, picking up loved ones and safely dropping them off to their designated locations. So in this fun activity, let’s discover what it takes to make a car that can navigate on its on using some of the on-board sensors from our robots.

AND

World Wide Web – Build A Chatbot That Can Help You
Tech is evolving and you could even say that it’s becoming a little more intelligent as the days go by. One of those advancements in our world right now are Chatbots, so come in and learn how to make a computer program designed to simulate conversation with human users, especially over the Internet.

Animation – Turning History Inside-Out
Turn history inside-out by making one of the first forms of animation- a Zoetrope. By getting an understanding of how animation has progressed throughout the years, you will be able to quickly transfer classic animation skills into a 21st century style animation film.

AND

Coding – Micro:bit Ins and Outs
Learn the ins and outs of computer programming using a Micro:bit – a tiny computer with a whole range of possibilities. With a Micro:bit, you can get inside your friend’s head with a Magic 8 Ball, or take it outside and go on adventures by programming a compass. The possibilities are limitless, so get creative, get connected and get coding!

Monday 8th October 2018 – Clean It Up!

3D Design – Ocean Friendly
This world is the only one we have, so making sure we look after it is important. Scientist believe that 10% of all plastics that are created each year end up in our oceans. This along with other pollutants, will soon make our beautiful clean blue oceans become a thing of the past. That’s where you step in, with your imagination and new found skills that you learn on the day, we ask you to invent some type of contraption using 3d software. What you create could one day be used to help clean up our oceans.

AND

Science & Engineering – Keep It Clean
We all need clean drinking water! Learn what it takes to create a simple filter that cleans the water, then let’s look at making a pump to get the water where we need it.

Animation – What Happens After Hours?
In every video game, there are important characters that bring the game to life. When you play the game, you become the character. You tell it where to go, what to say, who to become friends with… But have you ever thought about what the characters do when you do not control them? Do they have normal lives like we do? Do they go to school? Hang out with their friends? Play spot? In this class, you will go behind the scenes of video game characters, and reveal what their lives are like outside of the game.

AND

Coding – Bring the Old to the New with Micro:bit
Who said arcade games are dead? Let’s reinvent classic arcade games by using a Mirco:bit – a small computer you are able to program to create your own games with endless possibilities. With the skills you learn in this class, you can create a your own version of the pinball machine, a football game, an accelerometer game, and much more!

Thursday 11th October 2018

Electronic Engineering – Solve a Mystery
Is it possible to generate light through movement? Can you do so with no cost at all? In this class, we ask these questions and more by assembling a flashlight to solve a Mind Lab mystery. With the flashlight you assemble, you will get the chance to participate in a hands-on adventure game. Here you will channel your skills and knowledge of electronic engineering and light to help complete the puzzles and riddles at hand.

AND

Graphic Design –  Make a Mystery
Take some classic visual challenges such as Spot the Difference, Where’s Waldo and Slylock Fox and create a visual mystery of your own! We will step into the shoes of mystery makers to expand our methods of exploration, and apply these concepts through graphic design.

Friday 12th October 2018

Robotics – DIY Robot!
What if you never had to clean your room? Or brush your own hair? What if you never had to look for the TV remote ever again? If there was one task you could eliminate from your life, what would it be? What if all you had to do to complete that task, was press a button? In this class, we will explore some of these ideas by programming a robot to see if we can bring your ideas to life.

AND

World Wide Web – Settlers of the Future
If you could create a settlement in the future, what would it look like? Would it be a busy city filled with flying cars and a robot as its leader? Or, would you design a small settlement with technology that helps you live a simple life? In this class, we will dive deep into the various aspects of your ideal settlement, and focus on how future technology will shape its existence.
